Mercury 50hp Outboard Caught Fire

I have a Mercury 50hp 3 cylinder 2 stroke that recently caught fire under the motor cowl. It appears the wiring coming from the voltage regulator rectifier overheated and resulted in a smoldering fire. I have read where others have seen these bullet connectors or terminals getting hot and melting the plastic. Does anyone know what is causing this? I have replaced all the burnt wiring except for the two yellow wires coming from the rectifier to the wiring harness. Unfortunately, these all burned completely in two and I have no idea which yellow goes where or if there is a difference. I appreciate any help or advice!

Generally what happens is that the bullet connectors get a bit corroded. Resulting in resistance to the flow of current. Which results in a temperature increase at the connector. Which results in discoloured plastic, melted plastic and/or insulation and at times an outright fire.

The stator outputs AC. Alternating current. Both wires are the same. Does not matter which connects to the two input wires (on some models three wires) to the rectifier/regulator.
