Mercury 50hp no spark?

Hi!

I'm a 15 year old guy who recently bought a Monark 520 with a 4-cylinder Mercury 50hp engine (believe the engine is from 1977).
It has been working very well, starting really easy and never dying. However earlier today it simply died, won't start at all. I checked the ignition and there is no spark on neither of the 4 sparkplugs when I'm using the electric-start. However if I drag-start it I have ignition, why is this? What could be wrong?

lets back up a bit...when you say it died did it die while running or just would not start when you tried it after it was shut down normally?will it start consistently when you rope start it?...if so there are several things that could affect how fast you spin the starter on electric start...the most common is a dirty or bad battery connection...you could have a weak battery..you could have a voltage drop between the battery positive post and the starter terminal..you could have a bad ground..you could have a bad starter...do you have a multimeter and know how to use it?

It died just a few seconds after I put the reverse-gear in. Yes, I have a multimeter and know how to use it :)
 
will it start if you take a jumper cable and go from positive on battery to the positive post on starter?
 
glad you asked jeff....was curious of course but was not going to teach the guy courtesy...to be honest i was kinda glad the guy got it fixed and went..when i told him to jumper i made a mistake...if a 15 year old got his eyes hurt with molten medal i had a vision of his mother suing..so thats the last minor i am going to help..

I live in Sweden, here we don't sue people for trying to help 😂
