Mercury 50hp 1983 - no spark

I have a new-to-me motor that has an electrical problem. I can get it to turn over but can’t get a spark. This is what I tried:
Cleaned carbs. In doing so I disconnected, cleaned, and reconnected wires around the front cover and starter. I hope I put them back correctly.
Tested switches. The kill switch and mercury (tilt) switch appear to work. I jumped the gear control switch, else there was no power to the starter. I don’t know how to test the rectifier, stator, trigger, or terminal block. I’m getting these terms from a wiring diagram that seems good. The controller is a Quicksilver version 1.
Checked for spark. Nuthin. The starter engages and turns as expected but there is no spark from the new spark plugs.
Is there another safeguard? Can I check anything at the switch box?
I’m thinking it is either a short or some simple thing I am not doing.
