Mercury 500

Needing to install a new water pump in a 1970 Mercury 500 50hp. Was sent a kit that Mercury said would work. Looking at the differences between the old top pump body and the new one, the shaft hole is smaller and there's no seal on the the new one. Included in the kit are a bunch of washers. Can someone tell me if this kit will work for my application and where these parts go. Thanks

Here's the deal: After years of installing a seal in the top of the cover, Merc (and other manufacturers) found it was unnecessary and discontinued using it. The pump works the same with or without it.

Most motors still use a hunk of rubber (like a fat, square O-ring) just above the cover to keep dirt and sand out.
