mercury 500 stator I.D.

Good morning,

I have a mercury 500 / 50 h.p 4 cyl. outboard with a serial number of M267930 which is stamped on a plate at the mounting bracket below the front of the motor. This motor is a silver banded merc. I assume late 60's era. The problem I am having is locating the proper stator for this particular motor. I have contacted marine engine .com for help and was told that the number I gave them references a merccruiser stern drive motor? However, this number came off of my 50 hp outboard motor?? When searching for a part with this serial number I get nowhere. Can someone help to identify what stator I need for this motor. I have pulled the stator out and find no part number for reference. Frustration is starting to set in. HELP?

I am getting old and my eyes are worse than I thought, I rechecked the serial number and the letter M was indeed wrong, it is a 5 not an M. With that said, my life is easier today as I have now found the correct stator. Thanks for the info, I need to start measuring twice and cutting once as they say in the carpentry profession. Thanks for your assistance.

Well, thought it would be easy but still having trouble. The serial number 5267390, according to what I find on the parts list, brings me to part number 76314A3. I found someone with one and they told me it is a four wire stator while mine is a six wire stator. Two blues, two reds, going to the CDI box, and two yellows for the charging system. This is now getting serious as it is cutting into my fishing time. What do you think and thanks for the help.

I believe the 18-5866 is a replacement for the 76314A3. I have been told, from an ebay member that has a 76314A3 stator for sale, that his is a four wire while mine is a six wire. The electrical diagram that kimcrwbr1 sent appears to be the correct one as it shows a six wire stator with the color coding equal to what I have, however, it still does not state which part # for the stator of mine. Also, I thought the silver banded, with no other color but silver, was late 60's era, not 1976 - 1979???

Post a picture of your motor .-------If cowling is original it can be identified as to the year it was marketed.
