Mercury 50

Ive recently bought a Merc 50 outboard but the serial number plate has been worn away
There are numbers on the outside of engine head but they dont seem to tie in with 7 digit serial number
The previous owner thinks it is a 1978 model but without serial number i cant order up spare parts
Help!

Post a picture of the cowling --------If original it is easy to identify and give the motor a serial # that the dealer will accept.
