Mercury 50 not pumping water

i have a 50 hp mercury that pu

i have a 50 hp mercury that pumps some time and stops pumping and starts running hot. the impeller was replaced. i think what happen is some of the old impeller came apart and got stuck up is the head somewhere. where do i need to look frist for a blockage and will i have to pull the powerhead off to get it out? thanks for all the help.

"pieces could have gone anywhere. suggest you remove the lower unit, thermostat if equiped, water tube and then back flush from the tell tale with water. If need be the water jacket cover and exhaust plate can be removed without removing the powerhead. year/serial number ?"
