Mercury 402 40 hp 1970s

I have a merc 402 40hp not sure on the exact year but I know it's 70s, I'm trying to figure out how to take off the top cowl, any help is appreciated. The issue I'm having is the bendix not rising and just spinning in place. I'm hoping to remove the cowl and grease the bendix to see if that will fix the issue.

Should be a latch on the front of the upper lid. After you remove the front cover you should see it . Lift up and back to remove the lid

A fully charged battery and good connections are essential here.
