Hi
Cant get lower unit re-attached. All bolts lined up but just wont push on far enough. Gear selector/throttle handle in neutral. Also what is rubber tubing connected to plastic nipple?

Tubing is for a speedometer.------------Do you have an assistant to rotate the flywheel a bit when you try and push up the unit ?---------You might find that the lower unit likes to jump into forward gear when it is off.----So try assembly with control in forward and gearcase in forward.

Try rotating your flywheel a little to see if it's the crank/driveshaft splines that aren't lined up.

Normally I leave everything in "reverse" - that locks the prop so that I can turn the prop a little one way or the other and the driveshaft turns.

Rubber tube, with a plastic nipple coming from the gearcase - sounds like the pick-up for a speedometer. If you aren't using it, simply tuck it back into the gearhousing...

Thank you to all who gave advice. I got it back together and its spitting nicely. I let it run for a good while in the driveway. I'm a real mechanical novice but I enjoy the tasks. Only thing I am noticing is that neutral seems just a hair off from its previous location on the gear/throttle handle.
Oh yeah.... broke off 1 post/bolt while tightening water pump housing. Can i function ok with this? ps this is an older Mckee 14'

The water pump housing doesn't have to hold back that much pressure (maybe 20 psi max) but you don't want it leaking at that point either.

If it's impractical to replace the bolt (or is it a stud - can't quite remember), then at the very least I would seal the cover to the plate.

Even with the gasket in place I am in the habit of adding a bead of sealer between the cover and the gasket. A tube of (goop) for attaching the rubber gasket around your car door is perfect.

OMC used to make a sealer for that purpose (discontinued) and when I inquired with BRP/OMC their tech support told me that the stuff for car door seals was exactly the same formula (just a rubberized sealer that cleans off pretty easily when you remove the cover for next service) - been using it for a couple years now (2 or 3 bucks a tube at the discount auto places) and am pleased with the results..
