Mercury 4 hp water problem

"My 4 hp mercury serial number

"My 4 hp mercury serial number 26928696(approx 1970?) runs well, but suspect pieces of old impeller are blocking water path somewhere up in engine jacket. Can anyone advise best way in to look, there is a plate on tiller arm side of motor with 6 bolts, a plate on oposite side with 2 bolts and a plate under spake plug (attached to housing with 7 screws. Any suggestions on where to start?"
 
Remove powerhead and inspect/r

Remove powerhead and inspect/replace plastic washer at the top of the water tube.It is a commonly overlooked item.

"Thanks racer 1, will do. Further to my original question, when I flush from bottom of leg with garden hose, water gets to the special "flush screw" on the underside of thepower head, but not beyond to the proper 'pee hole'
