Mercury 350 kill switch

I have a 1967 Mercury 350 manu

I have a 1967 Mercury 350 manual start and would like to fit a remote kill switch. I bought a standard kill switch which I thought I could contact into one of the wires going to the stop switch. This doesn't seem to work. Is there a way of contacting this kill switch or do I need to buy a proper Mercury switch and if so how should I wire it?

"Ray, you can usually rig up any brand of kill switch by splicing it in.

The general principle behind them is, they ground out the ignition when activated or switched to "kill" the motor.

I would suspect that if you check you stop switch circuit with an ohm meter, you will find total continuity when it's set to "stop", and significant resistance (or virtually no connection) when in the normal run position.

Some aftermarket kill switches, including the lanyard styles, often give you the option of wiring them normally open, or normally closed.

In your case you want the circuit "open" until you want to stop the engine, then the circuit should "close" and send the ignition power to ground..."

Would I need to connect one of the wires from the kill switch to earth and the other to one of the yellow wires? If so which yellow wire. or doesn't it matter? Ray"

"Ray, yes it matters. You will have to determine which one is feeding from the Switch box to the stop switch.

If you tapped in after your stop switch, your kill switch wouldn't work unless the stop switch was also engaged (because the circuit wouldn't close with the kill switch alone).

So if you can trace the stop switch feed back to the switch box, tap your kill into that, and then yes, the other end simply goes to a good ground (any screw/bolt on the powerhead will work fine)..."
