I have a mercury 1985 35 hp. Making a grinding noise while running in gear or out of gear sounds like it’s coming from around the flywheel. Removed the fly wheel to checked the magnets and check for anything rubbing. Didn’t find anything. I ran the boat a few days ago for about an hour so I can’t believe it’s anything serious. It runs strong just makes an awful noise.
I got the boat and motor for $200 so I wasn’t really concerned with hurting the motor.
Someone told me that it could be the stator?
