I HAVE A 2000 MERCURY 3.3HP MO

I HAVE A 2000 MERCURY 3.3HP MOTOR AND I TOOK IT OUT TO THE LAKE AND STARTED IT UP AND DROVE OUT TO MY FISHING SPOT AND TURNED IT OFF.. BUT WHEN I WENT TO START IT AND PUT IT IN TO GEAR IT KEPT ON DIEING OUT AND THEN IT WOULD STAY RUNNING BUT THEN IT WONT ENGAUGE INTO GEAR. ANY IDEA WOULD BE GREATLY HELP FULL?

"Chad, sounds like you may have a few different issues there, so lets start back at the beginning.

It started up fine, got you out to where you went and then after being shut down it wouldn't start - correct?

Then it would start and idle ok after a bit of playing around but it won't go into gear when you shift? or it won't stay running when you shift??"
 
Well it would start up but whe

Well it would start up but when I would put it in gear it would die. but it will idle just fine. And now you can put it in gear and it wont spin the propeller but it will stay running?

"It sounds like you may have had a minor fuel problem - clog etc but that is the least of your worries by what you describe at the end.

If you are putting it in gear and the prop isn't turning you have either sheared/broken your driver shaft, or totally chewed your lower gears so there is nothing there to turn. Whatever the ultimate cause is, is neither good, easy or cheap to fix.

Not even sure how to advise you at this point.

Do you have a repair manual and the ability to work on this?? If not you could have it checked out at a shop, but if all what you have said is correct this motor may end up in the junk pile since a repair could potentally cost more than the replacement of a little motor like this..."
