Mercury 3.9 shift lever handle removal

I've got a '63 Merc 3.9 that I'm trying to replace the handle on the shift lever shaft. The parts diagram shows a nut holding it on. Mine only has a very small hole, maybe 1/4" and doesn't appear to have a set screw or nut or anything in there. Don't see a roll pin or anything else holding it on either. Anyone know how it comes off? Thanks

Yours uses the P/N 30747 in which the handle and cross shaft are cast and machined as one piece. You have to remove a nut inside the engine. You may have to remove the carburetor to gain access to the nut. My 1967 3.9 uses the "upgraded" plastic handle but my 1962 and 1963 6hp uses the same cast handle as yours. That handle was used on many early models in the early-mid 1960's, so just google by the part number. I found them on ebay, 9.8 hp same handle.
