Mercury 25hp outboard throttle trim switch

Hello,

I have an old panfish tracker. I replaced the old 25hp, Mercury 2 stroke with a 25 HP mercury four stroke about 10 years ago. The trim switch on the throttle never worked for the old motor, I just assumed it was an issue with the motor when I bought it. However, when I purchased and had the new motor installed, the technician told me that the existing trim switch on the throttle is just a “dummy switch”, with no wiring, so I’d have to start from scratch to wire it. I’m just now getting around to looking into doing this and don’t know where to start. Any advice? The videos I’ve watched seem to be focused on replacing an existing switch, so not really any wiring necessary rather than connecting it just behind the throttle,, rather than wiring all the way back to the outboard - which is what I assume I have to do? Maybe I am completely misunderstanding how this works.
