Mercury 25 Linkage Question

Hi everyone. Just joined up so this is my first post but I'm running into an issue with the Mercury 25 on my john boat. I've searched the forum but not found this specific issue. Probably because it is something simple that I just don't know how to correct.

I picked the engine up on a great deal with the guy not sure if it would run. Had an issue with leaking under the power head etc. I replaced the gasket on the head, added heli-coils as he'd boogered up the threads pretty good and added a new starter. Finally got around to buttoning it all up yesterday and was rewarded with actually getting to hear the engine fire and run. I couldn't have been more excited.

Now comes my issues (there are 2)
1. with the linkages hooked up if you push the throttle forward it goes into gear as it should. however when you go back to neutral it does not QUITE go into Neutral. Not sure if this can just be adjusted or not.
2. (Biggest issue) I have a Teleflex throttle setup that was used on this boat with the previous Mercury 25. It seems as if the throttle linkage is working opposite of what it should. For example when I go to neutral the throttle cable pulls in, which in turn open the butterfly and opens up throttle. When I go to full throttle if completely throttles down. I'm sure I've got something incorrect or backwards but I'm not sure what as I'm a newb.

Any help would be appreciated. I've attached a picture of how it is all connected as of now. If I didn't explain anything well or if you seem something simple I'm missing please let me know. Thanks!

**Further info** This is on a stick steer setup if that matters. Also in the pic (I just realized) the linkages were not attached to the spring loaded arm that pushes/pulls the throttle but hopefully I explained what is going on well enough.

1.Cable adjustment is out.
2.I think you might have one of those pull to go forward controls. When you push the control arm forward, check whether the prop locks both way or ratchets one way locks the other. If it locks both directions, you are in reverse.

Just went out and checked. If I put the throttle in the "forward" position it will ratchet one way and lock the other. Seems like everything is backwards haha.

I took the throttle control apart earlier and it didn't look like there was any other way to set it up but I can't say for sure

I just reread my post and I didn't make a good job of explaining myself, sorry:eek:.When you push it forward, check the prop, and if it ratchets, then you are in forward. And as you say "If I put the throttle in the "forward" position it will ratchet one way and lock the other" .So your control is "right"
Back to your problem, check that you have the cables correct, the throttle cable on the throttle and the shift cable on the gear linkage.

Well I am glad to hear it was right at least :)

The cables do seem to be hooked up correct as it is my understanding the shifter linkage should move first (to put it in gear) and then the throttle. Below is the same picture as before to outline what is going on.

When I push the throttle forward the cable retracts. This pulls the spring loaded arm forward at the bottom and back at the top. Then the rod pulls the throttle back thus closing the butterfly. When I move the throttle handle to Neutral it pushes the spring loaded arm and opens the butterfly to half throttle. I hope I'm explaining well enough. It's like the throttle cable is going in the wrong direction. But I'm not sure if I need some different assembly than that spring loaded arm there.
