mercury 225 with carbs

hello,motor starts and runs fine till 4k rpm then dies down .starts back up will run to 2k rpm but no faster. replaced fuel pump,fuel lines and filters,cleaned out tank,replaced balls.

Engine year would help. If a points ignition check under the plate in the dist. and see if the advance weights are rusted or springs are broken.

whats the history on this motor ?

Examples: sat for 20 years. Bought it new and the problem just started.
