" Hello,

I am looking for advice and words of wisdom. Just put my 19ft Runabout into the water yesterday. It has a 1988 completely rebuilt 200hp Mercury Outboard. Ran beautifully last year (first season on a lake with us!) Had it winterized by local marina. Launched yesterday, ran great, started up on the first turn of the key! The only problem, is it would not go into reverse. When I tried, the engine bucked and jumped. It couldn't catch. Have a call into the marina, but I am hoping someone here can provide some solutions, ideas and/or relief! "

"Amy,

If the lower unit was removed, I would say that it was put back together with the shift rod in the wrong position.

Otherwise, the problem might be a bad shift cable, or a poorly adjusted shift cable.

You can adjust the shift cable by screwing the plastic cylinder on the motor end of the cable in either direction.

You have to open the clamp which holds the throttle and shift cables in place before you can do this.

" Tony,

Thank you for the advice! My hope is that it is the cable, since the boat is already in the water. I (with some help) will check it out asap! I was looking through the manual last night and lots of possible scenerios were coming up!

Quick question - is it possible that the marina did take the lower unit off when I had it winterized? Would this be a standard procedure? Thanks! amy "

" Amy,

It is not standard procedure to remove the lower unit when winterizing.
