"I just bought an outboard boa

"I just bought an outboard boat. My first one and I am already haveing issues.

The port motor was stalling when returning to port for the day.
So I brought it to a mechanic. He said it was carbs and down two cylinders.
maybe three. So I pulled the carbs. He rebuilt and the motor ran slightly better but still down two cyl.

So he says its a stator.


Next day I ask him are you sure he says lets test it.
Test come back fine, Switch box test fine,
So he cleans some connections for these parts.
we check spark each time he cleans one and the spark gets better and better. SO confident we fire it on the hose.
It goes right to 2400 rpm at 0 throttle input!!

We check the connections all seems fine. He tests the trigger, says its no good I go buy a trigger. Install same 2400 and the timing is jumping all over the place still.

He calls it quits for the day.

Anyone have any suggestions??"

"i hate to lead you wrong im not certified or anything,but i just had that exact problem.i did everything i was getting spark to every cylinder,timing was in,new jets,carbs cleaned,one day mine just shot to 2600 rpm at start up.did everything i knew to do,took it to a boat shop for a quick look they checked timing,spark,etc.told me timing was of a degree or two"yeh right,just wanted me to pay him"said take it to the lake and try it,well the idiot retarded my timing to compensate for the high rev.i got how after no luck"it would not go over 2800 rpm without cracking up bad since the day it shot to high rev"i was stumped,even though all my test showed good spark and everything was functioning right,i had extra switch boxes and decided to swap them,just for the of it.well that was it.so i would swap the switch boxes if i was you."

I would like to know if the switch box solved your problem? I am haveing a similar problem with my 200HP. I thought I was having a fuel problem so I replaced filter and cleaned CARBS and rebuilt fuel pump. It turned out to be a trigger Assy. The engine starting reving high. but is in the normal range . But after I am running and anchor for a while the boat will start idle run at Idle when the throttle is applied it bogs out after a while it ill run just fine.

Well I guess I wish I got back

Well I guess I wish I got back here sooner!!

after spending some $$$$$ with three different techs who all said no way could packs cause this I decided to give it a try ANYWAY.
Well you guessed it. the switch boxes were the cause all along.

I got an expensive education in out boards though.
