Depends on if you have the serial number it should be on the side of the swivel bracket. To narrow it down what color are the coils under the red housings.

]That number makes it 1973........
Thanks very much for the information can the number tell any more ..shaft length ..prop length ect

Nope. All that number tells you is the year it came off the assembly line. Measure from the clamp bracket to the cavitation plate,if it measures 20" it's long shaft,15" = short shaft.

When i got the engine it was after being serviced ..it runs alright sounds good gear oil is new think I might have a small leak on the prop shaft found some fresh gear oil inside the hub
Really like the look of these motors though don't know why but do ..really want to save this one and get it looking and running like new

Just measured it again using the diagram you supplied and its 17.5" .. I have heard of a standard shaft here in Ireland . could this be one seeing as it was made in europe

Here is another part with a number on it ...are the parts for this engine the same as those on an American made engine ? ?

That is your switchbox.
To me standard would be long shaft. But that's only my opinion, please note username:D.Someone will step in and put me right.
Short shaft = 15",Long shaft = 20",X long shaft = 25" I can't explain why you're getting 17 1/2" but I would assume that it is short shaft
There is no difference in the outboards built in the 'States and those built in Belgium.

your a saint thanks very much ,,just to organise an account with a remailer now as marineengine dont ship directly to ireland ,, thanks again

not quite the screw head broke off ,,and the screw is seized in the hole and there is not enough to get a hold of ...the area around where the screw threads in looks like it has been repaired before,,,now if i had left the penetrating oil alone for a little longer we might have had a better result

heard from a friend a dealer out the road from me has some 7.5hp mercs scrapped and also has a few merc mariners scrapped i belive some of them use this part might take a trip out tomorrow and see if i get lucky

Like that film any which way but lose . probably cost more than the motor is worth but having said that I really like these motors so will most likely go ahead and do it ..its true what my granddad said common sense isn't all that common

I like these motors so I will most likely go ahead and do it anyway I think its nice to see an old motor looking and running well and holding its own against much newer motors

if you convert to electric start make sure you include the start in gear prevention....it is human habit to open the throttle on an engine when it starts to die...then it dies as it was going to do anyway and your hand is removed from the throttle with it wide open or close to it...then you choke it or whatever and start it....i had a friend do that loading it on a trailer one afternoon long ago and it was not a pretty sight..the boat was upside down behind the trailer and he was under it...he was one lucky dude and finally came out from under it.......

Thank ye both I will do .and to be honest I never thought of those .. can either of ye supply part numbers for these parts....
Also I am more than happy to learn from the mistakes and experience of the others on this forum so feel free to advise as I am very much a novice
Thanks to all for all the help so far
