My husband and I recently acquired a Mercury 200 20HP 2 stroke outboard, serial # 4290487. We have done numerous searches online by serial number, and we cannot locate anything online that will specify the exact year. We have searched all over the motor for a possible other number to no avail. How would we go about confirming the age?, we would love to start being able to order the parts needed to restore it back.

That looks to be a 1975 model.

When looking for Merc parts all you need is the engine (serial) production number.

Merc does not build "specific model year" outboards. They do that on purpose so a dealer is never stuck with "last years model".

So in the case of your motor, it came off the production line in 1975, but if it didn't sell until say May of 76, it was sold as a "new" motor as opposed to "last years mode".

You are actually quite fortunate that you have a newer model than you suspected. This model has Merc's Thunderbolt 4 ignition which is "quite modern". The 69 model would have still had points..

Awesome! We'd been doing research on it, and found where the serial number was falling in the 1975 range...I guess what was befuddling us was the fact that the Outboard motor inquiry we did at TWPD resulted in the year showing 1969....Sounds like the previous owner just made a guess on the year model? Who knows...lol! We are excited about the fact that it has the Thunderbolt 4 ignition that you speak of, and excited overall about the restoration of this boat and motor! Will post pics when we have completed it. :)

These are a nice looking motor - now you just have to build a 1950's "looking" mahogany runabout to strap it on to :)
