Hi

I am new on this forum.

One month ago i baught a Mercury 40hp. 4 cylinders. It starts fine and runs good. But after maximum one hour driving it just stops.
Sometimes it starts instant when trying to start it up again, and Sometimes it starts up after waiting for several minutes. I've been waiting up to 15 min before it finaly start again.
Any idea what this can be?
The motor is from around 1995.
I live in Norway so my typing is probably not the best
Hopefully someone can give me som hints her.

not 100% sure, but if it runs fine for an hour then cuts out - maaaybe its heat related and affecting something electrical. Whats the starting like cold and hot? Make sure you have 0 air leaks anywhere in your fuel line - make sure fuel filter isnt blocked. Have u cleaned carbs? You might have a large piece of debris causing intermittent problems..

Maybe a stuck choke / fast idle machanism? Does the throttle cable return to perfect idle stop in neutral? Slop might cause it to stop in a bad position..

My Mercury 40 hp outboard from about 1999 did something like that to me today 6/29/23. It started right up then after 15 minutes of running it kind of fast (22mph) the motor stopped running. I tried restarting it for about 15 minutes and I was off again. I did the same thing again later today I got it started and headed for the dock. I just replaced the starter and water impeller.
