Mercury 1996 15hp shift shaft cam

Does anyone know how far you should screw the cam onto to shift rod
This Is a 1996 mer 15 hp og328464
Went out Saturday and run about 15 miles and it ran perfect
Went yesterday and it would run in rev good but in forward it would shake and make noise anyone know if I broke something or not in gear good
I pulled the oil drain an found littl metal shavings about the size of pencil lead

Refer to user name as far as these motors go,but that sounds very much like you clutch dog has gone

sounds liek you have a motor problem and not a lower unit problem
