"New to boating. Bought 92 Trophy w/175 carb version w/320 hrs. Hadn't run in two years. Drained 30gals old fuel, replaced plugs. runs great in driveway.
Maiden voyage she idled in gear but dies every time I accelerate her. Accelerates in reverse fine. Restarting was tough too. Starter skipped out several times. May need a new battery too."

"Pull the carbs, disassemble and clean - at minimum replace the gaskets - kits wouldn't hurt. Typical issue when a motor has sat for more than 6 months.

Accelerates in reverse because that puts less demand on the motor - gags in forward when it calls for more fuel and isn't getting it.

That is very low hours as well for that vintage. I would also change the impeller (or more likely throw in a whole waterpump kit) and replace the lower gear oil as well.

A 17 year old motor with only 320 hours means, on average she saw less than 20 hours of use a year - that's barely a couple weekends a year (or more likely, alot of use the first year of so then parked most of the rest of the time).

That usually means NO maintenance was done - we don't spend money to fix things we don't use.

Get her all serviced up (whether at a shop or do it yourself). You don't want to toast the motor due to lack of patience in getting her ready to start running again after a long lay-up..."
