My name is Scott, I'm in Australia and this is my first post. I'm fairly new to the boating world and am keen to learn how my engines tick. I have LOTS OF QUESTIONS so be patient
I have an '85 6hp mercury in good working order. A friend down the road gave me a '96 15hp SeaPro and said if you can get it working you owe me a carton of beer! Naturally i'm pretty keen to get it working. It has been laying in his shed for who knows how long! He told me he thought the switchbox was dead.
I had it tested and sure enough the mechanic said that was the case.
The switchbox in the 15hp is rectangular in shape but according to the many hours researching spares on the net, the s/box in my 6HP is the replacemnt part for the 15hp as well (114-7452K1). So i am keen to take its s/box and put it in the 15hp (without blowing it up!!
) The wiring is obviously different though. I have a digital VOM.
Here is the wiring colours for both engines (and some questions thrown in)
15HP Merc:
1)Yellow wire & Grey wire to rectifier/regulator? Is this correct? What does this do and is it connected to the anything up under the flywheel? It seems to be just connected to rect/reg but it must be connected to stator as well - is it?
2)Red/Black & Blue loom with plugend. Does this go to stator?
3)Brown with white stripe & Brown with yellow stripe goes to little black 'thingo' under flywheel at the top of shaft. What is this and how does it work with other components? Is it the trigger ring.
4) other wires to coils and kill switches etc.
6HP Merc:
1)Yelow and Grey wires to rect/reg as per 15hp
2)Black with yellow stripe and Black with white stripe to stator. This is one LESS wire than 15hP. Why is this?
3)Brown with white stripe & Brown with yellow stripe as per 15HP to little black 'thingo'.
4)Coils/switches etc.
I need to know:
a) how each of these components relate to one another
b)how i can test the stators etc to avoid any damage to the good s/box.
c)which wires on the 6hp s/box marry up with the wires on the 15HP?
d)are there electronic versions of a manual anywhere on the net?
