The tach on my mercury drifts

The tach on my mercury drifts hi and changes eratically without rpm change or throttle movement. have checked connections on tach all seem fine. Would appreciate wiring diagram or advice to check powerhead end. any idea what the problem could be?

Did you take the connections off and spray them with something like W-D40. Sometimes the corrosion leads to bad contacts.
