Mercury 150hp 4 stroke failure

I was running the Mercury 150hp 4 stroke on a Tahoe 2150 that I purchased new in July of 2020. I was about 3/4 throttle when the engine beeped and dropped RPMs to 1200 all at once. There was a constant knock in the motor so I shut it off and coasted to the ramp luckily. I had a boat mechanic run the codes and he said I lost oil pressure at 4825 RPMs. It went from 17.6 then to 1.7. Most likely oil pump failure. Motor needs a power head. Insurance won’t cover and my warranty expired a few months ago. He said he could investigate further but thought I would want to save my money for repairs because finding out more doesn’t really help. What could cause this on a 5 year old motor with 147 hours on it? What would you do now if you were me? Honestly I just want to make it sellable and walk away.

You are shopping for a replacement powerhead.---Or a new motor.----If it was 17.6 PSI at 5000 RPM it was way too low I think.

On a five year old freshwater (I presume) motor with but 147 hours I would vote for a power plant replacement. For less than half the price of a completely new motor you will have essentially a new motor.

Finding the cause of a failure is difficult. NTSB spends millions of dollars and months of time looking for a fault. More times than not they can only come up with a "probable" cause. In other words, a good guess.

Boating folks can be somewhat strange. They devalue a boat with a motor that has a new power plant. Just the opposite when a new power plant adds value to an airplane.
