Mercury 150 hp shift cable hook up

I can’t get the shift cable to hook up to engine. Adjust the cable to fit into the barrel hole , cable lines up with shifter the stud has a spring so you have to squeeze it so the stud shows the threads. I can’t seem to get enough of the studs to show so I can’t put washer and locking tab and bolt down. Any ideas? Thanks

It was a stud on the channel where the cable ends sits. I pushed it down and turned it to the other side, allowing the threaded stud to go higher it’s spring loaded.
