Mercury 140 (1980) or Mercontrol - tightening throttle?

Hi,

I have a 140HP Inline 6 from 1980-1982. When I use the shifter/throttle control, it shifts fine, but the throttle seems loose, I have to push it all the way to the floor to get any real speed.

Is there an easy way to tighten the throttle? Would tightening the cable be enough or does this indicate a problem with the controller?

My Mercontrol box is the common one with the blue logo, separate high idle lever and choke button.

Could be a stretched cable (or cable problem).

Take the hood (cowl) off the motor.

Get someone to operate the control shift and "see what happens" - if you have a ton of travel in the shifter before the cable starts moving at the motor end of things, cable could be stretched or lost it anchor point on the control etc.

A bit of investigative troubleshooting is in order to figure exactly "what isn't happening" when you want it to
