Mercury 135 V6 Continuous Beeper sound

I recently bought a 135hp 2 stroke V6 outboard '00 model (pic) with 107 hrs. After a complete service and a 7 hrs of enjoyable boating I got a continuous buzzer sound. Checked oil ballcock, thermostat, replaced buzzer in throttle with no remedy. Mechanic said it might be a possible internal inner gear failure with a minimum parts cost but the huge labour work and cost as the engine needs to be teared apart. Any ideas welcomed! Many thanks!

If it does need to be pulled apart is this something you could do yourself? Save on labour that way and learn something about your motor in the process!

Unfortunately not! I am asking because I want to be sure about the mechanic's opinions, as this is the most costliest option! Could it be anything else wrong and can be fixed with less effort and cost?
