I've got an (I think) 1988 Mercury 115. Also have another one that's slightly newer (not sure the year--at least '89). The '88 is a 6-cyl, the newer one is a 4-cyl. Both are CDI. Ordered a new stator but got sent a trigger for some reason. New stator will take a week to arrive. Annoying. Upon further examination of the stator from the newer Merc (previously had just looked at the part # and saw that they didn't match up), it looks to me like the only difference is a black wire that goes to the switch (the one up top above the switch boxes--maybe the kill switch? Can't remember). Does anyone know if this is the case, and if so whether I could either skip that wire or otherwise wire in a ground directly to the stator and use the stator I have for the newer model? Would rather not wait another week--been chasing this ignition problem down for like 6 weeks and I think this is the final step.
