Mercury 110 9.8 hp - Bring back to life

I have acquired a 1975 (based on SN) Mercury 110 9.8 hp. It has been sitting for YEARS in a garage. I was able to pull it thru, so I assume it is not seized up. Before I put $ and time in to it, it seems on some research that it would be best to do a compression check. I don't want to do any damage to the motor since it has been sitting for so long. What would the best steps to check the compression?

This is was my initial plan
- remove the plugs
- fog the cylinders to lub the walls
- open throttle
- check compression

What would be the bottom line compression without looking at a engine rebuild?
Other thoughts and suggestions to see if there is any life left in the motor?

No need to open throttle at all to check compression.---------Check spark first.-------Replace impeller once you get it started !!
 
Even compression across the board,#s within 10% of each other, I would use oil/fuel mixture to lube cylinders thru carb to lubricate or in spark plug holes,turn by hand first.Like racerone says check spark,carb might need overhauling,fuel tank& lines cleaned and or replaced,fuel pump looked at,cleaned depending upon how long she's been laid up.
