mercruser 470 just both and having starter problem

I can get the starter to go by crossing the wires but not by using the key not sure where to start maybe the solenoid or is there anything that will stop me from turning over the motor like has to be in neutral?

Take a continuity test at the key switch S terminal and at the starter motor solenoid S terminal while the key is in "Start" position.
If equipped with a neutral safety switch at the throttle/shift unit, check this also.

Pull the engine harness/hull harness connector apart, and examine the contacts.
(this will be somewhere on the engine)
The starter motor solenoid circuit is in this harness, as well as all engine related electrical circuits.

I had to replace the IGN switch. Was not very costly. Boat US.

The switch seams to be working ok there is a click when tiring it but the starter does not go

i have gone over the wires the best i can and seams to be ok. I thing i will call in someone to get it working top notch do not want to have trouble out on the water thank you for your help.
