I have a 1980 470 egine start

I have a 1980 470 egine starts and runs great just after a hard run I can not cruise below 1200 rpms which causes wakes.

If I back it down the engine will stall it will re fire but I can not put it in gear engine temp around 180 to 190 Please anyone who has info Help Driving me nuts Has new ign system new carb plugs wires fuel lines just stalls after running for awhile but only at low speeds

"John, You might test your thermostat and see if it opens at the correct temp. Use a candy thermo and a pot on the stove to effect the test."

Chris I am running no thermostat temp runs 180 to 195 have not check heat exchanger yet. will be checking that one night after work if I get home early

I take it you know something about engines. I won't ask about the carb idle and timing being set. Is there a chance you have a vacuum leak at the carb or at the intake gasket?

Check for vac leak will check again I think it could be but I have to heat up engine all this happens after a run of 20 mins to 1hr then coming back at 800 rpms to not make a wake so anything is poss

It's driving me nuts always 100ft from the dock
sometimes as soon as I back down was going to work on it but pouring ran and kighting killed that idea for tonight.

"John, Your motor is running too hot for no thermostat. I would suspect heat exchanger is plugged or impeller on outdrive is bad or both are marginal. As for the stalling issue. You likely have a mechanical advance in the distributor. Are the weights free to move, or do they bind and are slow to return to idle position?"

I will check the heat exchanger 1st if that is good I will pull the boat out and check the impeller if that is good
I will check the weights

Just cleaned out the heat exch

Just cleaned out the heat exchanger found seaweed blocking flow. Ran the engine for about a half hour in Gear temp went 140 no higher have to take her out for a run will let know what happens. fingers crossed lets hope this is it

Thank god for boat us tow package can't beat it
