Mercruiser Voltage issue questions

Mercruiser engine 1984 which is having a voltage issue. I just installed a SI 18-5297 which is equivalent to a pertronix ignitor I conversion kit.

I am using a MSD 8222 coil also.

When I connect a new 12 v line from key switch to the pos coil post it drops the voltage down to 7.7 The red wire from the ignitor I is also connectd to the pos post of the coil. This is also only geting 7.7 volts then. When checking the neg post of the coil I get 3.3 volts.

Should I connect a new 12v line to the coil pos post and another 12v line to the ignitor I red wire to achieve 12 volts there also?

Thanks for the help guys!

there is no need to be running new wires. I`ll assume you have removed the points that used resistance wire to power the coil. And you ran a new wire from the electric choke to power the coil.

I ran a new wire from the key switch because the choke purple wire only had 11.5 volts and when connected to the choke it was 10.5.

As I said in the other forum, take the new ignition wire off the coil, and put your red probe on the wire, and the black probe to ground (anywhere). It should read 12volts, or whatever your battery reads with the ignition on, and let us know. You may be getting a false reading testing it while on the coil. Is that clear enough?

Hey guys, found out the issue and probably a solution to some people issues if they use an ignitor 1 unit. Per pertronix, I talked to a tech, does not use 12v at all. He also suggest not using an ignitor 1 on any marine boat. The dwell on the ignitor 1 does not adjust. This was my issue. Because dwell at a low rpm will open up longer it cause rough idle, but great WOT.

So I order an ignitor 2 and installed it last night. Fired right up and idle awesome. I thought hey let me see if I can try and start it without any prime and throttle advancing. Sure enough with the throttle in neutral, just turned the key and vroom. The ignitor 2 adds additional voltage on startup and adjust for dwell at low rpm and is critical for a great idle. Thanks all that help!
