"I need to replace the starter

"I need to replace the starter on my 81 Sea Ray. I have the Mercruiser 330 engine. From what I can see it's quite the task to get the starter out, but then again I've never taken off the starter on this engine. Anyone have some good advice so that I don't have to take apart the whole boat? Also I was quoted $193 for the replacement. Seems a little high."

"Ayuh,... I know your motor,

"Ayuh,... I know your motor, but not your boat...
It's entirely possible the motor has to be Pulled to change it...

"Tie the starter tightly from overhead, remove the battery cables at the battery, remove the starter brace, use a 1/4" ratchet & socket to fit, secure a length of 1/2" metal conduit to the ratchet handle and ratchet away while standing on your head.

Forgot to say take the starter

Forgot to say take the starter to a rebuild shop; much cheaper. I put the bolts back w/a thin amount of neversieze on the edge of the threads.
