Mercruiser shuts down after shifted into gear

I have a 1983 mercrusier 228 with a MR drive on it. I replaced the drive with a SE106 drive and replace the shift cable. When run in neutral throttle works fine on rev up with the muffs and the garden hose hooked up. When I shift into forward it shifts fine but the kill switch activates and kill the engine if I rev up while in gear. I have not had the boat in the water yet. Does naybody have any idead why it is shutting down in gear? but not in neutral on rev up?
 
I used that exact procedure but the kill switch still actuates as soon as the throttle starts to move with it in gear. I have seen a few posts that state that if you do not have the drive in the water there is not sufficent torque and the kill switch activates but am not sure if this is the issue or how that works
 
kill switch should only activate IN WATER, COMING OUT OF GEAR . Check the position of the adjustable stud, to high in the arm will allow too much travel tripping the switch from "over-travel" of the control cable.bottom left pic, 2A-7
 
I have a 1986 Mercruiser and the first thing I did when I got it was to scrap the darn "commander" control. It was made for idiots. I put a two-handle (excellerator & clutch) control on the boat. Takes a bit of modification at the engine but it gets rid of the rollers and other stuff. Like a car, one naturally has to be careful to slow the engine before shifting. With a dog clutch, the hazzard of killing the engine when you most need it is worse than the hazzard of banging the clutch hard. I decided I had rather damage the lower unit dthan the outboard end of the boat ahead of me on the pier. And I yet have not had a problem with my shifting safely.
