Mercruiser Shifter Cable stalls when putting into gear - please help

We have a 1986 Smoker Craft with an outboard Mercruiser engine. My husband took the shifter cable apart because it was loose and had a very hard time putting it back together because of the plate under the shifter cable. Is there some type of order that it has to go in? We finally got it to go into gear but when we put it in the water the boat is stalling when we try to go forward or reverse. Can anyone help us?

Is it stalling when shifting into forward/reverse or after shifting and then using the throttle?

Hi There - Thank you for your reply. It is stalling when shifting from Neutral into forward or reverse. My husband was trying to tighten the throttle and ended up taking it apart, then when he was putting it back together he realized there was a type of plate that had to be put back in a specific order so he was struggling with that for a while and we are not sure that "plate" was put back right. I was trying to find a manufacturer drawing or something online to help him but I could not find it.

Any ideas, comments, help would be greatly appreciated.

I used a SELOC manual 10 yrs ago when I completely disassembled, rebuilt and reassembled a commander 2000 shift assy. It had an exploded view of the assy. You should be able to find the same view here or mercruiserparts.com. What is the year and model?
