Mercruiser shift cable bellows problem

I can't get the SC Bellows over the brass piece on the end of the cable. Are there different cable diameters and bellows inner diameter on the nipple ?? ?? The bellows id seems too small to fit ..

Only one size for 60 years. Lube it up with dish soap.
