Mercruiser sea water pump weeping

Hi all, i have just replaced a mercruiser sea water pump on 5.7 litre. The previous pump seized and appeared to have been leaking through the weep hole.
I have just replaced with a new one, after a couple of minutes, the weep hole began dripping constantly. Am i doing something wrong!. The belt was not over tensioned and the hoses were clear of debris. The boat was in the water during the change over and the pump was primed before running.

The pump is a complete assembled unit part number 46-807151A18-36001. The only thing i had to do was change one of the extended bolts to a shorter one to suit the mounting bracket. Straight forward and torqued correctly.

Check to see if the quad ring (square ring not O ring) is in place (item 15)
The quad ring is place in a groove against the face of the pump. The stainless wear plate is next, then impeller and housing
 
If you replaced the entire pump with a new assembly, I'd say the new assembly is defective...was it an OEM pump or an "economical aftermarket alternative"?

Hi, so i split the pump to check the quad ring as you suggested. The ring was fine but i noticed the seal around the shaft was a little distorted and had the internal lip trapped. Ive pushed the lip back in with a fine feeler guage and it looks okay. I will refit the pump and see how it goes.

Thought about this more and if water is coming out the weep hole then water has gotten into where the bearings and grease is. If that happens even the new pump should come apart to clean and regrease

I'm wondering if it just looks like the weep hole and its actually coming from above or from one of the hoses

Definately the weep hole, yes, i would agree about regreasing the bearings, just not sure how the housing comes apart yet
 
The pulley would need to be removed using a puller (look for power steering puller)
Then there is a snap ring item 20, link in post 5
 
Hi Alldodge, finally got back to looking at the job in hand, (wife through a kitchen renovation in the middle of it!).
Do i just pick the existing seals out with with a spike, not worrying about destroying them or is there a technique.

Don't think you can pick them out with a spike but in either case they cannot be reused
You will need a press to press bearings off and back on.
The lip type oil seal on the shaft can be installed using various methods so long as the seal is not distorted
