Mercruiser- Sea Ray Sundancer

everything was working fine and when I went to dock the boat my starboard shifter was stuck and wouldn't go into reverse. I thought it was the cable but was told by the marina mechanic it was not. Does anyone know what this could be before they take my boat out of the water?

were you clearly in neutral before you shifted into reverse or where you trying to shift from forward back to reverse?
