Mercruiser Sea Pump Impeller Disintegrated

The pump guts on the sea water pump on my 454 Mercruiser was dry rotted and disintegrated. When I replaced the impeller there was not much left. There were a couple bigger pieces and a lot of smaller debris but no way all the old impeller was inside the case. Will the junk all pass out or should I be looking for parts or possible blockage?

In most cases the raw water pump goes thru a power steering cooler before the therm housing, start there

Is that cooler pretty wide open?

Would not depend on it passing all the chunks....

Its always something.... any suggestions for chunk hunting ..bearing in mind I'm not the lucky type!!>

Start immediately down stream from the pump, which in your case is apparently the ps cooler. If end caps are removable, remove them and shine a light thru the tubes. Should find most of the chunks on the inlet side of the cooler. If caps not removable, remove water lines and reverse flush it with a hose. That's the easy place to start. Next place is in the T'stat housing.

ok ..will try to flush the pS cooler .. nothing in the t stat housing at this point
