mercruiser no shift correctly

...1984 260 HP ,350 CHEV , MERCRUISER OUT DRIVE ,will not shift to reverse ,


i took boat to repair shop for noise in gimbel brg. before Memorial Day , would shift ok before trip to shop , they replaced gimbel bearing + new cable rear half ? still in the shop 6 weeks later , tech seems knowledgeable , said he just doesnt know the problem ...shifts n to fwd , but not n to reverse , said lower unit will shift with no cable attached , any help much apperciated .....................

could be a worn shift spool, can it be shifted manually from insude the boat using the cable.

either that or tech not very good for having it for 6 weeks and not find the problem!!I honestly dont know myself what problem is,but i would take it to somone else.I will ask a buddy of mine he messes with the mercruiser out drives.I will let you know somthing!!

It's a shift cable problem....Your Marina needs to go back and check cable, not install right...or set up right...before cable is set cable bolt must be at the bottom...
When you can't get Reverse, you move cable up slot...
