I have a 1985 advantage boat with a inboard mercruiser lower unit. I believe a 2.5 or 2.9 engine. the water pump isnt working. any ideas?? is it just like a car water pump?

are u refering to the actual water pump on the motor or the impeller in the lower unit..???

or is the engine runnin hot and u dnt know what the problem is..

The engine ran hot and it is my first time with one of these motors. I just want to know if the water pump is on the engine and if that would be my problem. or is there something in the lower unit I need to check.
thanks so much

The pump on the engine circulates cooling fluid while the rubber impeller is in the lower outdrive. It provides water to the engine and will fail before the circulating pump. The thermostat may be stuck closed. The circ. pump can be checked like an auto. Same w/the thermostat. The lower OD must be dropped to check the impeller. The shift cable should also be checked inside the engine compartment to see if overheating damaged it.

oh that is great. I did check the thermostat, but I didnt have a clue there was a impeller on lower. is that something a person can do or should I take it to a shop? I am a bit mechanically inclined with cars just dont know alot about boats

Get a manual; it's not hard to do. Since it got hot get a complete kit that includes the upper and lower housings w/the impeller.
