mercruiser I stuck in reverse

hi i have a 1973 starcraft capri had on water it ran great got stuck in reverse and no has no forward gear. we've adjusted cables @ motor no luck , had a mechanic look @ it and checked for any kinks in lower unit cables and found none. He's to busy with other projects to finish(nice huh!!!) told us next step was to check clutch gear or trace cable from shifter checked my manuel and thers no part called clutch gear?? any help would be greatly appreciated!!! thanks

does it go into fwd position or is the handel jammed in reverse too. pull the drive and see what moves.
