Mercruiser Drive

Yes I was out in my yard today getting my boat winterized and i backed the tires up on blocks and had the drive down and as I went in to get a drink I came back out and the Boat fell off the blocks... So at this point I went to hit the trim up button to raise the outdrive and it goes about a quarter of the way up then stops and wont move no further all though it will go all the way down by the same switch and it does go all the way up when we push the trailer button on are throttle... What could be the problem? Im really puzzled and mad at this point lol... But before this it worked all the time? After it happened we raised it up and checked to see if there was anything broke or lines pinched or ect... And everything looked great... Anyone help me out thanks...

Sounds like it working properly, the trim limit activates stopping the drive, and then the trailer button takes over.

It is the Mercruiser Bravo one outdrive.. I just bought the boat and haven had it out. and this is the first time i was able to put the outdrive all the way down is this something i could have just noticed because of that reason? And I could have swore my last boat went all the way up and down on the trim up and down contol button. Thanks for all the help so far you guys are great! Hope this is normal and a brain fart on my end... lol

All mercruiser outdrive boats for the most part all work the same way no matter how the trim trailer switches are placed or what type they are.

You have three fuctions.

1. Trim down, Typically a rocker switch in shift cointrol handle

2. Trim up, this is typically a rocker switch in the control handle, (same as used for trim down) it is regulated by a trim limit switch on the gimbal ring (rotating plastic switch) designed to limit drive trim up to just before cavatation begins, This is determined by water test by either owner or marine tech and adjusted in the water.

3. Trailer, Typically the square button at base of shift control arm, bypasses trim limit and will raise outdrive up from any position.

Outboards use only one switch for both in a lot of applications. Other manufactures and OLDER configurations may have had only one switch for trim up and trailer.............Mercruiser has been using this system descibed above since the sixties/seventies........

The newer controllers have a two position trim up rocker switch on handle. Push it lightly for trim and push a little harder for trailer.

Do not see too much of the newest stuff these days.......of course they can never leave well enough alone.........

When did this occur and what is the model number of the control?

Most of what I see/work on these days date from the 80's and into the 90's..........
The latest I have worked on was the commander xxxx where you had to shift it in one direction to get to the set screw to remove the handle and it had the trailer button in a wierd spot on one of the corners.......Never got that one other than real cheap and plastic....

Okay thank you all for the great information helped alot. sure its just me because it was the first time i had the drive all the way down... just bought the boat... I just have one more question when I winterized my boat I drained the block and the manifolds and poured the pink antifrize in the exhaust manifolds and the raisers and also from the water pump hose into the block... Now my question is this good to protect my boat through the winter I live In Cincinnati... We dont get terrible snow but we get are fair share and its cold lol... Boat is outside stored.. Im worried about the heads and the intake and the outdrive.. it has thru hull exhaust.. let me know thanks alot you guys are a great help...
