Mercruiser Alpha One - Engine dies in reverse after lower unit impeller replacement

I just replaced my impeller in my lower unit. The process was fairly straight forward as I've done this a few times in the past. Once I had everything back together and lower unit gear lube replaced I started up the engine and was able to put it in forward without issue. Then I went back to neutral and then tried reverse. The moment the boat was in reverse is sounded like a fast clicking and the engine died. I've tried it a number of times with the same result. Any ideas? I've pulled the lower unit again to inspect and I don't see anything out of line. I was inspecting the gear shift splines in the lower unit. I wasn't sure how far the splines should turn. They don't appear to turn very far by hand.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Jim

looking down and the brass shoe from the front when in FWD the shoe is in a straight line To use a clock,6:00, neutral is about 5:00 and reverse about 4:00 .The only other item is the plastic roller is not in the slot of the shift cable slide.

If you turning the splines in the lower unit , you turn them fully clockwise while turning the prop CCW .till locked, this is full fwd. Drop the upper unit on making sure the brass shoe is in a straight line

Thanks! I was able to drop the lower unit and realign the splines on the shifter and it worked! I was worried i had an issue with the shift cable.

Thanks again!
