Mercruiser 898 check

Looking into buying a glastron v184 with a pre alpha drive and a mercruiser 898 engine, first of all any expirience with the combo ? And the reason I am writing is that I will go to check the thing out in 2 days and need some info what to check, I guess compresion, spark, any other thing that needs attention ? The thing does look in rough shape in the photos but since the price is ridicilous I just think it would work

P.s. the owner claims its al 1985 but as far as I have seen both the 898 and the pre alpha stoped producing a few years before that am I wrong ?

Model was made 77-82 &83-84 from what i have researched on this site, Not sure about parts accessibility!

The 898 should be a 305 chevy motor.
as said, 1977 -1984.

so that would cover pre Alpha to Alpha based on serial number.


So if you have any serial numbers, Engine, transom assembly, outdrive that would help.

It is possible a 1984 combo made its way into a 1985 boat back then.......

Also does the boat have a hull number? Typically the last few number represent the year the boat was manufactured. It is usually located on the drivers side outside on transom.
