"Hi I have a 5.7 mercruiser just did head gasket & # 5 piston has about 20 hours since work done. 250 total. Anyway was manuvering at low speed forward then reverse and had trouble starting it... Put it in reverse and back to neutral and tried to restart and it made a loud grinding clunking noise which it does when you try and start it. Somebody tried totell me it is a seized engine ,it sounds like it may be an outdrive thing to me ,anybody want to take a guess at this one. Any help appreaciated .Thank You"

Are you saying the engine always makes that noise when it starts? Or just the one time? Flywheel ring gear missing a few teeth? Starter defective?

Thank you for the reply. This is a one time event.I did remove the starter and tested it, it is fine I quickly looked at the flywheel ring and could not see any issues.I put it in for ward and the prop moves freely.I am taking it out of the water this weekend and to a marina but still would really like to ease my mind. TY"

"Engine off, I think in forward the prop should only move in CC direction. The opposite for reverse. Clutch damaged?"
 
putting the gear in fwd should

putting the gear in fwd should lock the prop CCW and in rev CW. Pull the drive to isolate the trouble
