Mercruiser 470 running hot

"Sorry if this is a repetitive

"Sorry if this is a repetitive post but I have a feeling that I am about to get taken for a ride and needed a little advice. I have a 1988 Mercruiser 470 that ran hot and was leaking the water out of the small weep hole in the front of the engine. I had the seals in the front replaced as well as the impeller and the marine shop that I carried it to informed me that I need a new circulating pump, which costs as much as all of the other work I had done because he would have to lift the engine. When the boat ran hot I could put water in the top of the engine and it would run fine for about a half hour before the water would leak out and I would have to repeat. I thought this meant that the engine was circulating water. I don't know what to do. I am about to pay half as much for a repair job as I have in the boat. Suggestions would be much appreciated."

""I need a new circulating

""I need a new circulating pump,"

The work that was done on the front was the circulating pump. He probably said the outdrive needs a new impeller. Three years is an average life for an OD impeller. Why are you putting water inside the closed cooling that should have antifreeze?"

"When the man from the repair

"When the man from the repair shop called me today, the impeller and seals on the water pump had been replaced, and he told me that I would need a circulating pump which requires him to lift the engine to install. This wouldn't be on the outdrive would it?"

Did he just do seals in the fr

Did he just do seals in the front of the motor or did he say some sorta pump and guy is right get that water out of there and replace with antifreeze as soon as the leak is fixed

That's a lot of water to g

That's a lot of water to go out the weep hole! Did you check your oil for milkshake? Possible leaking exhaust manifold or cracked block?

The only pumps on your motor are the engine circulating pump and the raw water pump in your lower unit. It seems to me he's either pulling your leg (no pun intended!) or he doesn't know much about mercruiser drives.

"pulling your leg!!!!! hahahah

"pulling your leg!!!!! hahahahaha that's too funny.
i've seen those weep holes really spew a good stream of water out, but would agree that empying out your closed loop in half an hour is quick. , but more to the point. if your original symptom was the weep hole pissing water, then replacing the circ. pump should have been the only fix necesary. i don't understand what seals, and why were replaced on front of engine. sounds like impeller (in outdrive) is due for replaced too. i'm a 350 man myself, so someone correct me if i'm wrong, but is it really necesary to pull motor to replace the circ. pump??"
